The Great Bollywood “Star” System and its Reality.

The never-ending disagreement between the critics’ choice and audience’s popular choice seems to go on forever. The latest release, Vodka Diaries,is the the current topic for debate. The suspense thriller features Kay Kay Menon, Raima Sen and Mandira Bedi. Debut director Kushal Srivastava has attempted to intrigue the audience with fresh perspectives in the thriller instead of playing safe by going for a regular rom-com.The flow of the film, the shots and the performances seem effortless and keeps one engrossed with a nail-biting climax.
The audience is adapting well to these genres and preferring films with good content and less with the pretentious star cast. The audience seems to be taken aback by this brave attempt to raise the bar of Indian Cinema. Audiences that understand and long for good cinema, have appreciated the film because of its powerful content.

Also, directors like Vishal Bhardwaj, Imtiaz Ali and Ashutosh Gowarikar have applauded the film and the risk bearing grit of the filmmaker.
Vishal Bharadwaj:
Vodka Diaries’ Screenplay and storytelling reminds me of Mullholand Drive and the works of David Lynch. It’s a very brave film. Director Kushal’s work is mature, looks like it’s his 3rd or 4th film.
Ashutosh Gowarikar:
The plot was incredible! I can’t believe that this is the first debut of the Director Kushal Srivastava it kept me guessing through out
It is a very very unusual film. I think kay kay’s performance is stupendous
Imtiaz Ali:
Many of the things that happen in second half and first half I couldn't have thought. I am very happy that Kushal has made a film which is very unlike the films which are usually made in hindi.
But a few film critics seem to have acontrary response. The critics are finding loopholes and state that the film lacks logic, the same film which israted highly by the audience and accomplished filmmakers. The same critics give higher ratings to mainstream masala films,it makes one doubt whether they watched the film with an unbiased view or with pre-conceived notions and decided to watch it superficially.
Eg.
1. Befikre: 3.5
2. Chef: 3 stars
3. Jagga Jasoos: 3 stars
4. Ittefaq: 3 stars
5. Dishoom: 3 stars
6. Kill Dil: 3 stars
7. Meri Pyaari Bindu: 3.5 stars…and we know how these movies turned out.
These ratings show that the critics avoid the ‘loopholes’ and absurdity of some high budget films with a strong production house due to the face value of the stars. Best of the actors with the support of a famous banner at times end up making films which don’t go very well with the audience but the critics seem to understand the ‘logic’ behind every scene.
This leads us to question whether they rate films based on their personal preferences?
What do they mean when they talk about bringing change in Indian cinema, when they continue to discourage creative films?
There are some public reviews for the film which shows how critics were biased.
